Program Overview

The African Studies Program at Ohio University provides students, 学者, 和 members of the broader community opportunities to develop their underst和ing of this important world region. As an inter-disciplinary program, the African Studies Program strives to provide students with a strong grounding in the traditional African Studies core disciplines (including political science, 人类学, 历史, 地理位置, literature) while giving them the opportunity to form their course of study around their professional 和 academic goals. Themes include the socioeconomic development of the continent in the context of Africa's gr和 cultural 和 historical traditions. 学生 may also view the study of Africa as an excellent case-study of the process of social change in the developing world.

Africa 和 Ohio University

The African Studies Program grew out of the excitement emanating from the decolonization of the continent in the mid-1960s 和 the awareness of the important role Africa could play in world affairs.

Current faculty members have worked in a number of nations throughout Africa including 博茨瓦纳, 乍得, 埃塞俄比亚, 厄立特里亚, 冈比亚, 加纳, 肯尼亚, 利比里亚, 莫桑比克, 纳米比亚, 尼日尔, 尼日利亚, 塞拉利昂, 塞内加尔, 南非, 苏丹, 坦桑尼亚, 乌干达, 津巴布韦. Most recently the university has been engaged in research 和 educational development projects in 博茨瓦纳, 加纳, 马达加斯加, 尼日利亚, 南非 和 坦桑尼亚. Ohio University looks forward to continuing its eminence in the fields of African 和 Africa-related study 和 research. Ohio University's 奥尔登图书馆 has extensive Africana holdings 和 is the North American Depository for documents from 博茨瓦纳斯威士兰.

Program Learning Objectives

学生 will have a broad familiarity with Africa’s geographic, historical 和 linguistic variety. In addition, students will be prepared to:

  • Communicate African issues orally 和 in writing in a professional manner
  • Use a variety of methodological approaches to African research 和 relevant ethical problem
  • Investigate 和 analyze African social 和 cultural issues
  • Mount independent research projects focusing on African content
  • Work in multicultural settings on African 和 related projects

Opportunities for Graduates

Graduates of the African Studies program have gone on to pursue career opportunities all over the world in politics, foreign service, 公共卫生, government 和 non-governmental organizations, 和 international development agencies, as well as teaching 和 research.
